LUKE WAREHAM

Business Owner & Director

Black Background

I started the company back in 2013 when working at a local Social, Emotional and Mental Health school where I worked for some time as Deputy Head. Many evenings were spent on my Peugeot racing bike, delivering tuition in pupils' houses across Swindon. With a growing reputation as a teacher who could engage and attain very good progress I set up in an office and employed my first tutor in Kembrey Park. When I left St Luke's to run the business full-time, the Head at the time asked me to continue to work with some of the more challenging pupils as an Alternative Provision. We have grown! In addition to our Community Tuition Service, we now have a reputation as the go-to across the Borough for pupils needing an alternative approach to education.

I started working for STC in 2018, after previously working with young people in the not-for-profit sector and supporting therapeutic groups within mainstream schools. I began working as the Safeguarding Lead and was promoted to my current position in 2020 whereby my main role is to lead the strategic direction of the company, oversee all operations and develop new business areas.  I am very proud of the dedicated staffing team we have, especially our Alternative Provision Heroes who really do never give up on the young people who access our service. As we continue to expand I aim to shape the organisation so that the best support for both pupils and staff is at the heart of our policies and that there are opportunities for career progression within the organisation. Every child has a right to an education and when current methods to deliver  that education are not working, Providers must consider other ways to deliver teaching and learning programmes.  Education cannot be a 'one size fits all' approach.

I started working for STC in 2015 as an Additional Needs Tutor after previously working in  managerial roles in the retail sector whilst also acting as Chairperson for the board of a preschool. I was promoted to Accounts Manager in 2017 and now in my role as Head of Finance I lead on financial matters such as establishing company-wide financial objectives, targets, developing budgets, and performing financial analysis, which will ensure the company has a continuously sound financial structure. I oversee all payment transactions and invoice queries as well undertaking all bookkeeping responsibilities. My passion for working at STC lies in the social cause; not only the improved outcomes for the young people who otherwise may have fallen through the gap and the improved confidence of tutees from the wider community - but in also the social value the company brings to our local community in the creation of jobs, support with career changes and new meaningful partnerships with local spaces such as Stanton Park.

For the majority of my working life I had been employed in electronics, when in 2016 I graduated after 6 years study with a first-class honours in BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature.  Despite this success, I struggled to find a new career path, and settled for a new job in my old industry. My background in the field, however, allowed me to assist less-experienced colleagues, and during this period I found a real love for mentoring and educating others. Upon being made redundant due to a site closure, I sought a new career path, and found the Swindon Tuition Centre. The work I do here is the most fulfilling yet in my 22 years of working. I gain great satisfaction in helping others, and my role allows huge scope for this. In addition to teaching the subjects of English and Maths, I am able to give those under my tutelage the benefit of my own life experience. Being in a position where I am able to encourage critical thinking and foster important life skills is immensely rewarding, and I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to do so.

I started working for STC in 2018 after previously supporting as a key worker for a child with additional needs in an early years setting.  The joy of supporting him to overcome daily challenges and watch him flourish made me realise that I wanted to further my career in this area.  In 2021 I was promoted to Forest School Leader whereby my role is to develop and grow the Forest School offer for both the Dream Wild Holiday Club and Term-Time school sessions. I love building a strong bond with my students, allowing them to feel comfortable in the environment and then supporting them through their learning, so that they can go on to achieve their true potential in life. I have recently trained in Level 3 Forest School Leadership - talk about outdoor learning???

In my spare time I enjoy adventures with my children, walking our dog and finding new locations to go paddleboarding.

After a career in finance, following taking time out to raise my two young daughters, I was looking for a new opportunity to diversify my skills and pursue a career change in working with children and young people.  Through my work at Swindon tuition centre I love the fact that I have the ability to make a positive impact at a key time in a child and young person’s life. The position is challenging  and interesting and I have found that there  is something new to learn from each child I work with.  I am inspired by creative thinkers: Artists and Musicians who are able to express themselves through different mediums with the ability to inspire and promote flexible thinking in other people. I am also inspired by people within our community that work to make a difference in improving people’s lives on a daily basis. When i am not working i like to spend time with my family and Dog, I love to travel and watch live music, read and get creative on my sewing machine when i get the chance. I am also currently completing a BA Hons in Childhood Studies and Psychology.
